Over at lunch, while I was eating liempo (marinated, deep fried, thinly-sliced pork slices), Apple (a co-employee) reaches for some of my ulam.
Apple: Do you know why this tates great?
Me: Why?
Apple: Vetsin. The food's loaded with it. Can't you taste it?
Me: No ... is it really? We stopped using vetsin years ago when we learned it was cancerous.
Apple: Us too.
Me: We use chicken or beef cubes instead for tinola and other dishes.
Apple, in a matter-of-fact tone: Those types of food additives are also heavy on vetsin.
Me, with eyebrows raised: Really?
After lunch, I sat on my cubicle and asked my other female companions:
Me: Is it true that chicken and beef cubes have vetsin in them?
Pauline and Lorrie together: Yup, loads of it.
I'm flabbergasted.
